What you need to know about laser tattoo removal

I carry out the treatment with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser that holds medical CE certification. The principle is that the pigments in the skin absorb the high energy of the laser light, which causes them to shatter; the fragments are then cleared from the body by phagocytes via the lymphatic system. Laser tattoo removal is the most modern and most gentle method for removing unwanted tattoos, and offers my guests a safe and effective solution.

How long does it take for a tattoo to disappear, and how many sessions are needed?

It depends on your goal. If you want a new tattoo later, covering the old one with a different design, it does not need to come out completely. It is enough to fade it so that the new tattoo covers the area cleanly and the base is not too dark or solid. In some cases laser work is not needed at all and the design can simply be covered with a tattoo.

If complete removal is the goal, this is a longer process — it can take 10 to 15 sessions. It is worth thinking it over, but with enough patience and adequate rest periods a nearly 100%, scar-free result can be achieved.

The rest period between sessions is a minimum of 6–8 weeks; the skin needs this long to regenerate. After that the treatment can be repeated. A single session takes roughly 10–30 minutes. After the first session or two, newer tattoos (made within the last 4–5 years) or dark, solid ones fade only slightly and may temporarily look stronger as the pigments come to the surface.

 General information

  • A maximum of one palm-sized area can be treated per session; larger tattoos are split across several sessions.

  • A single session takes roughly 10–30 minutes.

 When do I recommend it?

  • Your tattoo is at least 1 month old and has healed completely
  • The tattoo is too dark to be covered or reworked without fading it first
  • In the period from autumn to spring, when you are able to keep up sun protection

 When treatment is not possible

In the case of illness, fever or active herpes, let us arrange a new appointment. If you have a chronic condition, take medication or have allergies, tell me, consult your doctor and ask for the list of photosensitizing medicines.

The treatment can be carried out safely 10 days after a Dermapen treatment, 2 weeks after a course of antibiotics, and one month after botox, hyaluronic acid, acid deep peels or other aesthetic procedures. Only intact skin can be treated; in the case of an injury or sunburn we will find a new appointment. If there is any skin lesion or a large number of moles in the area, let me know and send a photo.

Treatment can begin if every one of the following is true for you:

  • I have not sunbathed, used a tanning bed, or burned my skin in the 2 weeks before treatment.
  • I am not pregnant and not breastfeeding.
  • I have no inflammation in my body and no fever.
  • I have not had retinoid therapy in the past six months, am not currently using retinol, and do not use any skin-thinning product.
  • I am not unusually photosensitive and do not take medicines that cause photosensitivity.
  • I do not have HIV/AIDS.
  • I do not have a bleeding disorder and do not take blood thinners.
  • I do not have any of the following health conditions: severe diabetes, very high blood pressure, circulatory disorders, skin diseases, cancer, epilepsy, heart failure, lupus, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis.
  • I have not had chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the past 5 years.
  • I have not waxed or epilated the area to be treated in any way in the 2 weeks before treatment.
  • I have no pacemaker, piercing or metal in the area to be treated.
  • I have no herpes, injury, skin condition or open wound in the area to be treated.
  • I do not have severe rosacea.
  • I do not have hypopigmentation.
  • I am not prone to keloid (scar) formation.
  • For 2 weeks after removal I will avoid sun exposure and activities involving heavy sweating (e.g. sports, skiing, holidays, wellness programs).
  • For eyelid tattoos, I only want the outer corner treated where the pigment has migrated.
  • For lip tattoos, I only want an over-tattooed contour removed.

 Preparing for the treatment

If you have any chronic condition diagnosed by a doctor, or take medication, consult your doctor before booking. Sunbathing and tanning beds are NOT permitted for 2 weeks before treatment. If you are prone to edema, taking an antihistamine 1–2 days beforehand is recommended. On the day, avoid caffeinated drinks. Vitamins taken in high doses can make the area bleed more easily.

The number of sessions cannot be planned in advance and varies from tattoo to tattoo. If you have had tattoo removal treatment before, tell me what treatment it was, when, and how many times.

Every removal process is personalized. We adapt to the current condition of your skin and to the size, color and density of the tattoo in question. I choose the type of treatment based on these factors (HARD laser or Carbon Peeling).

 Consultation and test patch

For booking I recommend a consultation in person. Before the first session we discuss your goals and any questions in detail, and plan the treatment process on that basis. Particularly for colored tattoos or large areas, we do a laser test patch before starting the full treatment. This means I treat a small area at one or two points and we see how it responds and how effective it is.

A consultation and test patch can be requested before any removal begins, and the first one is FREE.

What to do after the treatment

Following the procedure you may experience redness, blistering, swelling, edema, a burning sensation, wound formation, pinpoint bleeding or peeling.

Aftercare: apply La Roche-Posay Cicaplast B5 cream twice a day (morning and evening), continuously until the next session. For the first few days it is recommended to wipe the area before applying the cream with Octenisept disinfectant sprayed onto a cotton pad. The swollen area can be cooled or iced carefully over the next few days, briefly, through a clean towel. If blistering occurs, do not apply cream to it, do not puncture it — let it resolve on its own.

RECOMMENDED in the following days: rest, adequate fluid intake and vitamin C. It is very important to look after the wounded area until it has healed completely.

DO NOT rub or soak the treated area, or expose it to extreme heat or cold.

For 2 weeks avoid intense exercise and activity involving sweating, swimming pools, bathing, hair removal, saunas, makeup and other cosmetics.

For 1 month do not use a tanning bed and do not sunbathe. After that, always use sun protection when you are out in the sun. Sun protection after treatment: a hat or baseball cap and SPF 50 sunscreen are MANDATORY. With permanent dye (in the case of eyebrow tattoos) the area may be colored after 1.5 weeks.

After the treatment, no new tattoo can be made for at least 2 months; waiting longer is recommended.

 Arrival

My address: Ria Sminktetoválás, 8200 Veszprém, Szeglethy József u. 1., Belvárosi Üzletház, 2nd floor, unit 203

The building opens at 8:30; before that you can come up to the 2nd floor by elevator from the parking garage or the ground floor. If you arrive after 18:00 or at the weekend, come to the rear stairwell (service) entrance next to the underground parking garage and call me so I can let you in.
+36 70 637 0408

Please arrive on time for your appointment, no more than 10 minutes early. If you are running late, let me know. After 15 minutes I can no longer guarantee your slot. Things come up — in that case tell me as soon as you can: the sooner you do, the more easily we can arrange a new appointment, and the more likely someone else can take an earlier slot.

Please come alone if possible; if someone does come with you, let me know.
